If you detail cars in Chicago, Boston, Toronto or Winnipeg, your year is not twelve months. It is a fall protection window, a winter of interior work, a spring rush that decides your revenue, and a summer of steady exterior bookings. The detailers who do well are the ones who treat that calendar as the marketing plan rather than something that happens to them. This is the plan, with the timing and the evidence.
The shape of the year
Twenty-eight US states and the District of Columbia sit in the Salt Belt, and every Canadian metro except Vancouver behaves the same way. The trade press describes the pattern bluntly: business booms in spring and summer, and as soon as fall and winter begin, things can grind to a halt, with road salt on carpets and sub-zero temperatures making quality mobile work hard. Search interest follows: five years of Google Trends data put May as the peak month and November as the trough. In Toronto the numbers are sharper still. Mobile detailers there report that April and May are the peak, the post-winter detail is the single highest-ROI service most drivers book each year, and most GTA detailers pause exterior work and coatings from December through February because products will not bond below 5°C.
September to November: sell the armor
The pre-winter window is the most under-marketed part of the detailing year, and it is where the ticket sizes are. Toronto detailers tell customers to apply a durable sealant or ceramic coating in October and November as a sacrificial layer that takes the brunt of the road salt. That framing sells. A coating is not shine in October, it is insurance, and the customer who has watched rust bloom on a rocker panel understands it. Prices support the push: GTA operators list ceramic coating at C$599 for a sedan to C$799 for a truck, and in the US the national range is US$900 to US$2,500. Paint protection film on the front end, rocker panels and behind the wheels sells on the same logic at US$1,800 to US$2,500 for a full front.
What to run: a ceramic coating campaign and a paint protection film campaign with winter-specific ad copy and landing pages, live from the first week of September, with budget peaking in October. Meta Ads do well here because the audience is not searching yet; a short video of salt spray on an uncoated panel next to a coated one is the whole pitch. Bundle a coating with a one-step correction and a pre-booked spring salt removal, and you have sold the customer's next two visits in one transaction.
December to February: interior, and pre-booking spring
Exterior work stops, but the customer does not. Toronto's recommended winter schedule is interior salt removal every six to eight weeks, and a second Toronto operator advises winter maintenance every four to six weeks. That is a subscription product hiding in plain sight: a monthly interior salt and slush clean at a fixed price, sold as a plan in December, keeps a mobile van or a heated bay busy through the dead months. Shops with heated space have the advantage; mobile operators should be honest in their ads about temperature limits rather than booking work they cannot deliver on a minus 15 day.
The second winter job is filling April before it arrives. Every enquiry that comes in during January and February for "a full detail once the weather turns" should be booked into a specific April or May slot with a deposit. A calendar that is 60% full on March 1 is worth more than a February full of clicks. Spend-wise, this is the throttle period: cut the exterior and coating campaigns to a maintenance budget or pause them, keep the interior detailing campaign live, and keep the Google Business Profile posting so the reviews and rankings do not go cold. Pausing everything in December and restarting in March is the most expensive thing a northern detailer can do, because Google's learning resets and you re-enter the auction with no data in the busiest month of the year.
March to May: the rush that pays the year
In the Salt Belt the spring rush is not a bump, it is the year. Toronto detailers say that built-up winter salt has to come off carpets and undercarriages before warmer weather accelerates corrosion, and every driver in the city works that out in the same three weeks. Budgets should be at their annual high from the first thaw, which is March in Philadelphia and Chicago, April in Boston and Toronto, and May in Winnipeg and Edmonton. Bid on the plain terms, "car detailing near me" and "interior detailing", because that is what the salt customer types; the 2026 SERPWARS list puts "car detailing near me" at 450,000 US searches a month and "interior auto detailing near me" at 22,200. Price the salt package clearly and put it on the landing page. The customer who books a US$180 spring interior is the one you sell a coating to in September, so capture the email and phone at booking and tag them for the fall campaign.
Where hail changes the calendar
Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago and Calgary get a second spike that has nothing to do with salt. Colorado's damaging hail concentrates in a six-week window from about May 15 to June 25; State Farm paid more than US$5.6 billion in hail claims in 2025, US$1.4 billion of it in Texas, with Illinois in the top five; and Calgary's 5 August 2024 storm produced nearly C$2.8 billion in insured damage. In those markets the film campaign goes live before the storms, not after, because the customer who has just paid a deductible is the easiest film sale you will ever make, and they are searching that week.
The rule for spend
- September to November: coating and film campaigns at 30 to 40% of annual budget.
- December to February: interior campaign only, Google Business Profile active, spring pre-booking offer live; 10 to 15% of budget.
- March to May: everything on, plain-term search at its annual high; 35 to 40% of budget.
- June to August: steady exterior and correction; the remainder, lifted in hail markets.
Those splits are how Detail Up plans northern territories, not an industry standard. Across the accounts we manage, all of them Australian, the average cost per tracked enquiry from Google Ads is AUD $14.70 and the Meta detailing campaigns average AUD $11.86 per lead; the seasonal weighting is a large part of why. Details are on the results page.
What to do next
Write your own version of the calendar above with your city's thaw date and first-snow date, then check whether your ad spend last year followed it or fought it. Read how Google Ads for detailers is budgeted by season, and book a call before September if you want the fall coating campaign live in time.
