A detailer in Dallas and a detailer in Toronto can both say they pay "about forty dollars a lead" and be describing completely different things. One is buying a shared Thumbtack contact that three other shops also received. The other is paying for an exclusive phone call from a Google ad on a page they own. The sticker price is the least useful number in the comparison. This article puts the 2026 prices side by side for the US and Canada, converts each into a cost per booked job, and shows what the detailing accounts Detail Up runs produce as a reference.
The market you are buying into
The US car wash and auto detailing industry is worth about US$18.7 billion in 2026 according to IBISWorld, growing 1.5% a year over five years and flat in the last twelve months. IBISWorld counts 16,879 businesses in 2026, up 1.8%. Canada is smaller and growing faster: 3,929 businesses in 2026, up 4.6% on the year and 3.6% a year since 2021. In both countries the revenue sits in express car washes and the margin sits in detailing, where a ceramic coating runs US$900 to US$2,500 and a full front of paint protection film US$1,800 to US$2,500. Those ticket sizes are what make lead cost worth calculating properly.
What the marketplaces charge
Thumbtack (US, limited Canada). Pay per lead, charged when a customer messages, calls or books, whether or not they ever reply again. You set a maximum price per lead and a weekly budget. Across all categories leads run US$10 to US$100 or more, with common averages of US$35 to US$60. For detailing specifically, a 2026 review reports US$30 or more per lead in competitive markets, US$50 or more in dense metros, and roughly US$175 in lead cost per booked job at a 10 to 30% conversion rate. In Canada, Thumbtack is available in some cities only.
Angi Leads (US). Pay per lead plus a membership of about US$300 a year, with leads at US$15 to US$85 shared among three to eight businesses, 12-month contracts and reported monthly minimums of US$400 or more. There is no published detailing rate; cleaning at US$15 to US$35 is the nearest category.
HomeStars (Canada). Angi's Canadian arm. You pay for placement in your category and area and again per lead, and most leads are shared. Pricing is not published; contractors report C$40 to C$80 per lead.
Yelp Ads (US and Canada). Pay per click, not per lead. Yelp publishes no average cost per click and gives a category estimate at setup. The entry point is about US$150 a month, with an upgrade package at US$180 and bundles from US$270.
Bark (US and Canada). Credit packs, a one-off fee to respond to each lead, and the cost shown before you respond. Bark does not publish US or Canadian credit prices on its pricing page; credits now expire after three months.
Google Local Services Ads (US and Canada). Pay per lead with the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge. "Car Wash and Detailing" is an eligible category, and Google split automotive into finer categories in August 2026 as it moves LSA into Google Ads. Google does not publish a per-lead price for detailing; the rate is set by auction in your area.
Nextdoor and Facebook Marketplace. Nextdoor sells impressions at about US$20 per thousand; a business page is free. Marketplace listings are free and unpredictable. Neither is a lead channel you can plan a month around.
What your own Google and Meta ads cost
The nearest independent benchmark is the automotive repair, service and parts category in the WordStream and LocaliQ 2026 search benchmarks: US$4.35 per click, a 15.5% conversion rate and US$29.96 per lead. That is a US average across auto services, not a detailing figure, and Canada has no equivalent public dataset; Canadian agencies plan local-service accounts at C$4 to C$12 per click. At keyword level, the 2026 SERPWARS list puts "car detailing near me" at 450,000 US searches a month and US$2.28 per click, while an agency running detailing accounts reports US$5 to US$15 per click for high-intent terms in competitive metros. Both can be true: the average click is cheap, the click you want is not.
Our own figures are from Australian accounts and are shown as a reference for what a single-service, single-territory build produces, not as a US or Canadian benchmark. Across the Google Ads accounts Detail Up manages the average cost per tracked enquiry is AUD $14.70 across 34,500 enquiries, and the Meta Ads detailing campaigns have delivered 441 leads at AUD $11.86 each. One detailer received 88 leads in 30 days. The account-level detail is on the results page.
Cost per booked job is the number that matters
Take the Thumbtack figures at face value: US$40 per shared lead and a 20% close rate gives US$200 per booked job. If the job is an US$89 exterior wash, you lost money before you picked up the sponge. If it is a US$1,099 five-year ceramic coating, as an Atlanta mobile operator lists it, the same US$200 is fine. Now take an exclusive lead from your own campaign at the WordStream US$29.96 benchmark. Exclusive leads close at a higher rate because nobody else is quoting; at 35% that is about US$86 per booked job, on the same coating. The marketplace lead is not two times worse. It is closer to two and a half times worse, and the gap widens every time the platform raises its prices, which every platform on this list has done.
- Shared marketplace lead: US$30 to US$50, closes at 10 to 30%, you do not own the customer record or the reviews.
- Google Local Services lead: auction-priced, exclusive to the call, tied to the badge rather than your website.
- Your own Google or Meta lead: US$30 benchmark, exclusive, lands on a page you own, tracked to the keyword.
Run your own numbers in the lead value calculator, or work backwards from a revenue target in the jobs calculator.
What changes between the US and Canada
Three things. Season is sharper in Canada: Toronto detailers report April and May as the peak and a pause on exterior work from December to February, so a Canadian budget is front-loaded into a shorter window and a cost-per-lead average over the year hides a cheap spring and an expensive January. Platforms are thinner: HomeStars replaces Angi, Thumbtack is partial, and LSA coverage varies by city. And the law is different in wording but not in effect: the FTC's guides on guarantee advertising and Canada's Competition Act rule that performance claims need an adequate and proper test both mean nobody can honestly promise you a fixed number of leads. What a good provider can sell you is an exclusive territory, tracked enquiries and a fee tied to the enquiries that arrive.
What to do next
Pull your last three months of marketplace invoices, count the booked jobs, and divide. If the answer is over US$150 per job on sub-US$300 services, the platform is eating the business. Read how lead generation for detailers works when you own the channel, then book a call to check whether your territory is still open.
