A ceramic coating is the most profitable service a detailer sells and the hardest to sell cold. The customer does not know what it is, the price is five to ten times a full detail, and the internet is full of forum arguments about whether it is worth it. This article gives you the durability facts from the manufacturers, the price bands in three markets, a way to lay out tiers that makes the middle one obvious, and the follow-up sequence that turns people who priced a detail into people who booked a coating.
The durability facts, from the people who make the products
Start with what you can prove, because a coating sale is a durability sale. Gtechniq states that its Crystal Serum Ultra lasts "up to 9 years", that Crystal Serum Light is rated for five years, and that traditional wax gives "4–8 weeks" of protection before it washes away. CarPro is more conservative about its consumer product: its "real-world durability claim for CQ.UK 3.0 is 18-24 months". Chemical Guys, which sells both, says wax delivers a shine that lasts "up to 3 months" while a ceramic coating lasts "anywhere from 2 to 5 years or more". A UK detailing supplier, Autobrite, puts the typical wax coating at "up to four months".
Put those on your coating page in the manufacturer's words with a link. Do not round nine years up to "lifetime" and do not promise a warranty the manufacturer does not offer; the UK's ASA, the US FTC and the ACCC all treat a durability figure as an objective claim that needs evidence. "Rated by the manufacturer for up to nine years with annual maintenance" is honest, specific and still very persuasive next to "wax lasts two months".
What coatings sell for in 2026
Prices are all over the map because "ceramic coating" covers everything from a spray sealant to a two-day correction and a nine-year certified install. The published bands:
- Australia. A Sydney mobile operator quotes $1,000 to $2,000 for a ceramic coating; Melbourne studios list correction and coating packages up to $2,500.
- New Zealand. A Tauranga studio lists NZ$799 to NZ$1,699 depending on durability tier.
- United States. A national pricing guide puts professional coatings at US$900 to US$2,500; a San Jose studio lists US$645 to US$1,205 for 2- to 5-year coatings.
- United Kingdom. A Berkshire guide breaks the market into mobile or budget professional at £200 to £400 (1 to 2 years), standard professional at £400 to £800 (2 to 4 years) and premium at £800 to £1,500 or more (5 to 9 years). A Fife studio lists a new-car detail with a 3-year coating at £495, a 5-year at £595 and a correction package with a 7-year coating from £1,750. Budget studios list a ceramic coating at £195 on top of a polish.
Two things stand out. First, the spread inside each country is wider than the spread between countries, which means the customer has no anchor and you get to set it. Second, the cheap end is real and it is your competition on price, so you cannot win by being cheaper. You win by making the tiers clear.
How to present tiers on your website
Three tiers, named by outcome rather than by product code, with the middle one designed to be chosen.
- Protect (2 years). Single-stage machine polish, one coat of a 2-year coating, wheel faces. The entry point for a car under three years old. Priced at roughly three times your full detail.
- Protect and Correct (5 years). Two-stage correction, a 5-year coating, wheels, glass and trim, a maintenance wash at six months. The one most people should buy. Priced at five to six times a full detail. Mark it "most popular" and put it in the middle.
- Concours (7 to 9 years). Multi-stage correction, the flagship coating with the manufacturer's registered warranty, wheels off, interior fabric and leather protection. Priced at ten times a full detail. It exists to make the middle tier look reasonable, and a few people a year will buy it.
Under the tiers: three photos of your own work with the vehicle and tier named, the manufacturer durability line with its link, your maintenance requirement in one sentence (annual inspection and a maintenance wash to keep the warranty), and a booking button that asks for two daylight photos of the paint so you can quote by phone. Add the two questions everyone asks: "Do I still need to wash it?" (yes, but less often and with less effort) and "Will it stop stone chips?" (no; that is paint protection film). Detail Up builds this layout on every ceramic coating page because it consistently outperforms a price list.
Retargeting the people who priced a full detail
The best coating prospects are already on your site. They came for a full detail price, they own a car they care about, and they left. The Meta Pixel records that visit, and a Meta campaign can show coating ads to that audience for the next 30 to 60 days for a fraction of what cold reach costs. The sequence that works:
- Days 1 to 7: a 15-second beading video with the line "A full detail lasts a month. A coating lasts years." Link to the tiers page.
- Days 8 to 21: a before-and-after of a correction with the manufacturer durability claim as the headline.
- Days 22 to 45: a customer review about the coating, with a lead form that offers a free paint assessment.
Run the same logic on the people who booked a full detail. After the job, send one SMS: "Your paint is in good shape after today. If you want it to stay that way, a 2-year coating on top of the work I've just done is [$X] instead of [$Y] because the prep is done. Valid for 14 days." Upgrade rates on that message pay for the campaign on their own.
Review proof
A coating is a trust purchase and reviews are the trust. BrightLocal's 2024 US survey found 88% of consumers would use a business that replies to all of its reviews, against 47% for one that does not and that 76% expect a rating of four stars or better. Ask every coating customer for a review at handover, while the car is in the sun, and ask them to mention the coating by name so the review shows up when the next buyer searches "ceramic coating [city] reviews". Reply to each one and name the tier. Our guide to getting Google reviews without breaking the rules covers the rules.
What to do next
Rewrite your coating page around three tiers and the manufacturer's durability claims, install the pixel, and send the upgrade SMS after every full detail. If you want the page, the campaigns and the follow-up built and run for you, see ceramic coating leads or book a call.
