A detailer with a limited budget has to pick a platform first. The honest answer is that the two do different jobs: Google catches people who already want a detail this week, and Meta creates demand for the high-ticket services people did not know they wanted. This article puts the 2026 benchmarks side by side, explains where each platform wins for detailing, and shows what Detail Up's own detailing accounts produce.
The 2026 benchmarks, with the caveat
The best public benchmarks are American. WordStream's 2026 Google Ads study covers US search campaigns from April 2025 to March 2026 and reports, for automotive repair, service and parts, an average of US$4.35 per click, a 15.5% conversion rate and US$29.96 per lead. That category converts better than almost any other in the study: the all-industry average is US$5.42 per click and US$66.69 per lead. Home and home improvement, the closest comparison for a mobile service business, runs US$8.33 per click and US$90.92 per lead.
WordStream's Facebook study for the same period reports the lead-objective average across all industries at US$1.80 per click, an 8.5% conversion rate and US$27.39 per lead, and home and home improvement at US$42.95 per lead. Automotive repair does not appear in the leads data at all, which tells you something: detailers and mechanics have historically run Meta for traffic and likes rather than for leads, and the ones who run it properly are competing with fewer people.
These are US numbers. Australian, UK and Canadian clicks are generally cheaper in local currency for the same terms, and there is no published benchmark for "car detailing" in any of those markets, so treat them as a shape, not a target.
Where Google wins: intent and "near me"
Someone who types "mobile car detailing near me" or "ceramic coating [suburb]" wants a quote today. Google search is the only place you can buy that moment. The automotive conversion rate above is high because the intent is high: a search ad that shows a price range, a phone number and a booking button closes without persuasion.
Google wins on: full details and interior details, pre-sale valets, anything with "near me" or a suburb in it, and emergency jobs (spills, pet hair, a car being returned to a lease company). It also wins on Google Maps. A well-run Google Business Profile sits beside the ad, and Google states that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking". The ad and the profile reinforce each other.
Google Local Services Ads, the pay-per-lead format, is worth checking in your country. Google lists "Car Detailing Service" and "Car Wash" as eligible categories in the US, but its UK category list does not include valeting or detailing, so British valeters run standard search ads. Availability in Australia and Canada is limited and detailing is not a core category.
Where Meta wins: coatings, film and correction
Nobody searches for a nine-year ceramic coating until they know it exists. Meta is where you show them: a 20-second video of water beading on a coated bonnet, a before-and-after of a two-stage correction, a film install on a new car. Meta's leads objective puts a pre-filled form inside the ad, and its Advantage+ leads campaigns let the system find the people most likely to fill it in. The buyer is browsing, not searching, so the job is to make the service desirable and the enquiry effortless.
Meta wins on: ceramic coating, paint protection film, paint correction, new-car protection packages, gift vouchers and anything visual. It also wins on retargeting: the Meta Pixel on your site lets you show coating ads to everyone who priced a full detail last month.
The cost of Meta leads is lower and so is their intent. A Meta lead is a person who was interested for thirty seconds; a Google lead is a person with a dirty car and a Saturday free. That is why Meta leads need the fast response system covered in our speed to lead article more than any other lead source.
What Detail Up's detailing accounts produce
Across the car detailing accounts Detail Up manages on Meta, the result is 441 leads at $11.86 per lead, with Wollongong NSW producing 254 leads at $13.21 and Perth WA producing 187 leads at $10.02. Those are Australian dollars and they are lead-form enquiries, not booked jobs. Across nine Google Ads accounts Detail Up has spent $507,000 for 34,500 enquiries, an average of $14.70 per enquiry, with car detailing accounts in Newcastle NSW and the Gold Coast QLD inside that total. The detailing-specific Google numbers are published on the results page and updated as the accounts run.
The lesson from those accounts is not that one platform is cheaper. It is that Google enquiries book at a higher rate and Meta enquiries are cheaper to generate, and a detailer with both running gets the calendar filled by Google and the coating pipeline filled by Meta.
Which to run first
- Mobile or valeting business, first campaign, under $1,500 a month: Google search only, tight radius, phone-call ads, price in the ad copy. Add Maps once the profile has 20 reviews.
- Studio selling coatings and film: both from day one, with Google catching the "ceramic coating [city]" searches and Meta running video to a 25 km radius. Budget roughly 60/40 to Google in month one and move toward 50/50 once the retargeting audience exists.
- Established business with a full calendar: Meta first, because you do not need more $200 details, you need $1,500 coatings, and Meta is where those are made.
- Any business in winter: Meta for protection and interior packages, Google trimmed to the highest-intent terms.
